Nats need digging out of the hole they've dug instead of building tunnels | Rob Oakeshott | Independent for Cowper
Independent candidate for Cowper, Rob Oakeshott, is calling on Scott Morrison and Bill Shorten to clearly state their positions on the Coffs Harbour bypass as it becomes increasingly apparent the National Party are in disarray on the topic.

"The Leader of the Nationals was in town last week and, in an interview on Prime 7, refused to guarantee funding for the project saying that the Government is still working out what it needs – which is actually is what the paper trail would suggest," said Mr Oakeshott.
"Yet the new National Party candidate is telling his communities it's all sorted. Asked on Triple M on the 26th of April whether there was funding for the project he replied 'Absolutely, 100% ... the funding is there. It is guaranteed, and there are tunnels.'
"Maybe we need to bypass the Nats and find out what commitment the Liberal and Labor party leaders are prepared to make about finishing the Pacific Highway and building a bypass with real tunnels (not cuttings with bridges) that are acceptable to the Coffs community," Oakeshott said.
"As I stated at the Coffs Chamber of Commerce breakfast last week, the definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over and expecting a different result. After 30 years of waiting, the monopoly political party in this electorate is now running all sorts of arguments and contradictory statements trying to win your vote, but there's no evidence trail to support any of what is being promised.
"Actions speak louder than words. The highway bypass has not been built. It is now the last section of the Pacific Highway upgrade to be completed. Community consultation has been appalling, the EIS hasn't even been delivered and basic design is not confirmed. Essentially, the bypass is hardly past square one," said Oakeshott.
"I invite the people of Cowper to use the ballot box on May 18 to sort out this mess. Voting might be the best tunnel building tool in the kit."
