Oakeshott cheers late-scoring win for Port Macquarie hockey | Rob Oakeshott | Independent for Cowper
Independent Candidate for Cowper, Rob Oakeshott, has welcomed nearly one-and-a-half-million dollars in funding for the Port Macquarie Hockey Association that will allow plans for a long overdue clubhouse to advance.
“I'm delighted that $1.45 million to build a clubhouse for Port Macquarie Hockey will be delivered regardless of who wins the seat of Cowper and whoever wins Government in Canberra," said Mr Oakeshott.
"I have taken the time to confirm that this is real money and not the ‘funny money’ of pre-election promises.
"As a member of a hockey family in Port Macquarie, I'm stoked with the progress and growth of this international sport in our region. As a political candidate, I'm stoked that competition on the political field is finally drawing attention to projects here. After six years of waiting this one is now happening," Oakeshott said.
"The second field funding from my previous time in office has been spent and that field is now well and truly in use. More and more players from Port Macquarie are reaching representative levels in hockey and the opportunity to attract bigger events to the region is building momentum.
“But there is plenty more to be done for sport in Port Macquarie. Completion of the Wayne Richards Park project is well overdue and that is very much on my radar for the coming Parliament. This will benefit cricket, AFL, mountain biking, soccer, as well as hockey," said Oakeshott.
"Demand for sporting fields within the Hastings Valley is a priority issue for all outdoor sports in the coming Parliament. So while I welcome the hockey funding as a step along the way – and proof of the value of political competition – I will continue to work for more funding and less waiting for sports facilities on the Mid North Coast."
